On Sunday, June 19, 2022, an open discussion as part of the Kefalonia Wine Hub initiative took place at the Robola Cooperative, Orealios Gi, organized by the Kefalonia Winemakers Association and Antheia Kotsi.

The event focused on Climate Change, with guest speakers Dionysis Grammatikos, Head of the Department of Vine, Wine and Spirits at the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, and Giorgos Tsinidis, agronomist and oenologist. Mr. Grammatikos presented the issue of data collection in viticulture and changing climatic conditions, while Mr. Tsinidis discussed the challenges facing viticulture, the impact of climate change on winemaking techniques, and practical approaches to recovery following natural disasters in vineyards.

The event was attended by members of the Kefalonia Winemakers Association, grape growers, and representatives of the Region of the Ionian Islands. The discussion also explored the relationship between culture, viticulture, and Kefalonia’s winemaking tradition.

The open discussion was complemented by a group of guests invited by the Association. In addition to the speakers, the group included journalists Nikos Ioannidis, Ioannis Panagos, Maria Giouroukele, and winemaker Argyris Gerovassiliou. They toured Kefalonia’s vineyards and wineries and gained a deeper understanding of the wines produced on the island. The guests also contributed their knowledge and expertise to the open discussion on climate change.

The Kefalonia Wine Hub initiative had just begun and aspired to become a hub for reflection and discussion around the most important issues affecting wine and winemakers. The initiative was designed to take place annually, with the goal of placing Kefalonia on the global map of wine tourism destinations while also playing an important role in highlighting the key issues facing the island’s wine industry.
